What 100 engineering and manufacturing websites tell us about sector relevance, proof and buyer support

Nebula reviewed the public websites of 100 UK engineering and manufacturing businesses to examine a simple question:
How easy do engineering companies make it for a prospective buyer to understand who they serve, see evidence of relevant work and find useful information to support a buying decision?
This was not a design competition and it was not an assessment of which companies have the best marketing.
Instead, we used a fixed set of visible website signals that could be checked consistently across the sample.
The audit focused on three areas:
whether the website explicitly referred to sectors or industries
whether we could verify a reference to case studies
whether the website used the word brochure as one narrow indicator of supporting sales material
The results show a marked difference between explaining technical capability and making commercial relevance and proof easy for a prospective buyer to find.
Key findings
Across the 100 websites reviewed:
58% used explicit sector or industries wording
40% had a verified reference to case studies
13% used the word brochure
30% showed none of the three exact signals measured
32% showed one
35% showed two
only 3% showed all three
These figures should be read within the limits of the research. A signal being “not detected” does not prove that equivalent information did not exist elsewhere on the website. A company may, for example, offer technical datasheets or catalogues without using the word “brochure”.
The audit measured consistent, identifiable signals. It did not attempt to score the quality of every asset.

1. Sector relevance was visible on 58% of the websites
Of the 100 websites reviewed, 58 used explicit “sector”, “sectors”, “industry” or “industries” language within the defined audit check.
For a prospective engineering buyer, this type of information can answer an important early question: Does this supplier understand businesses like mine?
Engineering companies often explain their processes in detail. A visitor may find information about CNC machining, injection moulding, tooling, fabrication, testing, automation or other technical capability.
That information is useful, but capability and relevance are not quite the same thing.
A buyer working in aerospace, medical devices, defence, food production or another specialist market may also want evidence that the supplier understands the standards, production conditions, applications or commercial expectations of that field.
A clear sectors section can provide that context.
It can show:
where the company's capability is normally applied
the types of customer it supports
common problems it solves
relevant technical requirements
examples of work in a particular market
associated capabilities and services
This does not mean every engineering SME needs a large library of sector pages.
For a smaller firm, three or four well-defined priority sectors may be more useful than a long list of markets with very little explanation.
What the finding does not mean
The 42 websites where sector or industry wording was not detected should not automatically be treated as having poor positioning. Some may organise their information by application, product type or another structure.
Our result is narrower. It tells us that explicit sector or industry language was not consistently present across this sample. That matters because explicit language can reduce the amount of interpretation required from a visitor.
2. Case-study evidence was less common
Only 40 of the 100 websites had a verified reference to “Case Studies” in the public website text checked during the audit. This was one of the clearest findings.
Engineering businesses often have substantial evidence of successful work.
They may have:
solved a difficult production problem
reduced a lead time
redesigned a component
supported a move from prototype to production
improved repeatability
created new tooling
achieved a difficult tolerance
reduced waste
supported a customer facing a supply problem
delivered a technically difficult project
The issue is that much of this knowledge may remain inside the company. It may be known by engineers, directors, project managers and sales staff without being turned into something a prospective customer can read.
Why case studies matter
A service or capability page tells the buyer: “We can do this.”
A strong case study can help answer: “Have you successfully done something comparable before?”
That distinction is important in technical B2B buying.
A case study can connect technical capability with a real problem and outcome. It does not have to disclose confidential customer information. Where customer names or commercial figures cannot be published, an anonymised example can still explain:
the problem
the technical constraint
the approach
the work completed
the result
For example:
A specialist manufacturer needed to move a component from prototype into repeat production while maintaining a demanding tolerance. The supplier revised the tooling and manufacturing process, completed validation work and established a repeatable production route.
That gives a buyer more evidence than simply listing the equipment available.
26 websites showed both sector language and case-study wording
Looking at the signals together gives another useful finding. 26 of the 100 websites had both explicit sector or industries wording and a case-studies reference. This combination can be useful because it provides two different forms of information.
Sector content establishes relevance. Case studies provide evidence. A website that connects the two can make it easier for a prospect to move from:
“They seem to work in my market”
to:
“They have evidence that they can handle this type of work.”
Again, the audit measured presence rather than quality. A website could contain both signals and still have weak content. The figure should therefore be treated as a structural finding rather than a performance score.
3. Brochure wording appeared on 13% of sites
The narrowest check in the study concerned the word “brochure”. It appeared on 13 of the 100 websites reviewed. This figure needs more qualification than the other two.
Engineering websites use many types of supporting material, including:
catalogues
datasheets
technical specifications
capability documents
application notes
product guides
technical guides
installation information
certificates
CAD files
Our audit did not count all of those formats. We specifically recorded whether the word brochure could be detected within the standard check.
The result should therefore not be reported as:
“87% of engineering websites have no downloadable sales material.”
Our research does not support that claim. The more useful issue is whether a website provides something helpful to a visitor who is interested but not yet ready to make contact.
A website has more than one job
Not every visitor arriving on an engineering website is ready to ask for a quotation. Some are still comparing suppliers. Some may be carrying out technical research. Others may need to send information to another engineer, manager or procurement colleague.
Useful supporting material allows the website to help during that stage as well.
Depending on the business, this might include:
a capability statement
technical selection guide
application guide
specification document
process guide
product comparison
design guide
technical checklist
The exact format matters less than whether it helps a prospective buyer make progress.
4. Looking at the three signals together
The company-level results allow us to look beyond the headline percentages.

Signals measured: sector/industry wording, case-study wording and brochure wording. “Not detected” does not prove that equivalent content was absent.
The distribution is useful because it shows that the findings were not simply caused by a small group of very basic websites.
The largest group, 35 websites, showed two of the three signals. Another 32 showed one. 30 showed none of the three exact signals, while only three showed all three. The third signal is particularly narrow, so the fact that only three websites met all three checks should not be interpreted as meaning only three had strong websites.
Instead, it shows how uncommon that exact combination was in the sample.
5. The signal combinations tell us more
Breaking the findings down further gives the following distribution:

This provides a little more context. The most common specific combination was sector or industry language together with case-study wording, found on 26 websites. Another 23 websites used sector or industry wording without a detected case-studies or brochure reference. Only eight had case-study wording without either of the other two signals.
The purpose of this analysis is not to identify a single “correct” website structure. Different engineering businesses have different buying processes, products and customer needs. It does, however, show that the three forms of buyer support were far from universal across the sample.
6. What does this mean for an engineering SME?
The research points towards a practical issue. A technically strong business may already possess most of the information needed for a strong commercial website. The missing part can be making that information easy for a prospective buyer to find and understand.
Engineering companies considering improvements to their website can start with five questions.
1. Is it immediately clear what the company does?
Technical accuracy matters, but the opening message should still make sense to a new visitor. A buyer should not have to work through several pages before understanding the basic offer.
2. Can buyers tell whether the company works in their market?
If sector knowledge matters to the sale, make it visible. This can be done through sector pages, applications, project examples or clear market references within capability pages.
3. Is there evidence?
Claims such as “high quality”, “expert” or “trusted” are much stronger when supported by something concrete.
Evidence could include:
case studies
project examples
certifications
customer results
technical achievements
testimonials
inspection capability
manufacturing standards
4. Is useful technical or commercial information available?
A visitor may not be ready to contact sales. Give that person a useful next step where appropriate. That could be a technical guide, capability document, catalogue, specification sheet or another practical resource.
5. Is the next action clear?
Once a prospective customer has enough information, the website should make the next step easy.
Depending on the business, that might be:
request a quotation
send a drawing
speak to an engineer
discuss a project
request a sample
ask a technical question
The right action will differ between companies. What matters is making it obvious.
7. A practical website review framework
An engineering SME does not necessarily need a complete website rebuild. A more useful first step is to review what prospective customers can already see.
Relevance
Ask:
Is our main capability clear?
Are our priority customer sectors visible?
Do we explain where our capability is applied?
Does our wording match the way customers describe their needs?
Evidence
Ask:
Do we publish project examples?
Can we show results without breaching confidentiality?
Are certifications and quality standards easy to find?
Do we show specific technical outcomes rather than only general claims?
Buyer support
Ask:
Is useful information available before someone contacts us?
Do we have technical guides, datasheets, specifications or capability documents?
Can someone easily share useful information internally?
Conversion
Ask:
Is there a clear next step?
Does the contact route match the way customers actually buy?
Can a prospect send the information needed for a meaningful first conversation?
These questions go beyond the three narrow signals used in the audit. They are practical recommendations arising from the findings, not additional measured results.
8. Why the findings should not become a website checklist
It would be easy to turn this research into the wrong conclusion:
“Every engineering website needs sector pages, a case-study section and a brochure.”
That is not what the data shows. The research measured three visible signals because they could be checked consistently across a defined set of websites.
A business should choose content based on its customers and sales process. A company selling standard engineering products online may need a very different site from a specialist subcontract manufacturer winning a small number of high-value projects each year.
A business working under strict confidentiality may not be able to publish named customer case studies. A company with a detailed technical catalogue may have no reason to call anything a brochure.
The aim is therefore not to copy three website features. It is to answer the underlying buyer questions:
Is this supplier relevant to me?
Can I see enough evidence to trust its capability?
Can I get the information I need to take the next step?
Research methodology
Sample
Nebula reviewed 100 accessible public websites belonging to engineering and manufacturing businesses listed within the Made in Britain Engineering directory.
The review was carried out on 13 August 2026.
Companies were taken in directory order. The unit reviewed was the public-facing company website available to a prospective buyer on the audit date.
Signals measured
Three fixed text checks were used.
Case studies
Recorded as detected where the phrase “Case Studies” appeared within publicly readable website copy under the standard audit check.
Sectors or industries
Recorded as detected where “Sector”, “Sectors”, “Industry” or “Industries” wording appeared within the standard public website check.
Brochure
Recorded as detected where the word “Brochure” appeared within the standard check.
The brochure measure was intentionally narrow and does not cover every form of downloadable or supporting material.
Combined analysis
Each website was then grouped according to how many of the three measured signals were detected.
This produced the following distribution:
30 with no signals detected
32 with one signal
35 with two signals
3 with all three
The company-level coding was also used to examine which combinations occurred.
Important limitations
This research should be read as a benchmark of a defined cohort, not a national estimate of every UK engineering or manufacturing company. The sample was not randomly selected from every business in the UK.
Membership of the Made in Britain directory may itself mean that the companies in the sample are more active in communicating their business publicly than some other manufacturers. The audit also measured the presence of specific wording.
It did not measure:
website traffic
search rankings
lead volume
conversion rate
revenue generated through the website
design quality
content quality
mobile usability
technical SEO performance
enquiry quality
customer satisfaction
A term being “not detected” should not be interpreted as proof that equivalent information does not exist. Websites may use different terminology. Some content may also be loaded dynamically or presented in formats not captured by the standard text check.
Finally, websites change. The findings represent what was available during the review on 13 August 2026.
